Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a condition which occurs when harmful bacteria invade the gums. Even with regular oral care such as brushing and flossing, plaque can still find its way into the gums leading to gingivitis, a form of gum disease. Early treatment is essential to keep gum disease from progressing and causing additional health issues.
Periodontal disease is a progressive disease that requires treatment in order to help avoid tooth loss. Untreated periodontal disease has been associated with strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, and pregnancy complications, and can affect your overall health.
Periodontal Disease Treatments
When you visit Bowcutt Dental, Dr. Bowcutt and his hygienists will exam your gums for any signs of periodontal disease. We will look for loose teeth, inflammation, bleeding, pocket depths, gaps, and more to diagnose gum disease.
Periodontal disease is categorized as follows:
- Gingivitis: the first stage of periodontal disease. Gums may be tender, inflamed, and likely to bleed.
- Periodontitis: at this next stage, plaque on your teeth has hardened to tartar causing the gums to recede from the teeth.
- Advance Periodontitis: plaque, tartar, and bacteria continue to cause damage. Without treatment teeth will become loose and may be lost.
Once Dr. Bowcutt has helped to diagnose the type and severity of periodontal disease present, he will help you set up a treatment plan to help your gums heal and to keep your teeth as healthy as possible. We offer cleanings, deep cleanings, and other treatment options to help you overcome periodontal disease.
