Root canal therapy is a common procedure used to help save your natural teeth. Also known as, endodontic therapy, root canal therapy involves treating the inside of the tooth in the area containing the nerves and blood supply. The procedure is one of the most common, can help eliminate pain, and can help you avoid tooth loss.
When the inside of tooth becomes inflamed or infected due to decay, chips, cracks, or other trauma, a root canal may be necessary. After a tooth becomes infected, many patients notice sensitivity to temperature, pain in the tooth and gums, and possibly swelling in the area of the tooth.
The procedure to remove the injured pulp, clean the root canal system, and seal the tooth is simple and can be done in one or more visits with little to no discomfort.
Root Canal Therapy – What to Expect
After a thorough examination, Dr. Bowcutt will determine if root canal therapy is a good choice for your tooth. While many patients who have never had a root canal before will worry that it will be painful, we want to reassure you that the procedure is relatively pain-free.
Unlike the pain that you may experience before a root canal due to the infection, swelling, and drainage, root canal therapy is not a painful procedure. During the root canal treatment, Dr. Bowcutt and his staff will work to make you as comfortable as possible. As with other dental procedures, like a tooth filling, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the area.
Once the area surrounding the tooth is numb, Dr. Bowcutt will work to remove the nerve, pulp, decayed tissue, and bacteria. The tooth is then thoroughly cleaned and sealed. Most root canal treatments can be performed in one visit. After your root canal therapy, Dr. Bowcutt will discuss appropriate restoration options including fillings or a crown.
